Field of Theatre and Performing Arts
Beginning with the 2018–2019 academic year, following validation by CNATDCU on July 18, 2018, and in accordance with OMEN Order no. 3353/2018, the Theatre and Performing Arts doctoral field was approved for establishment and operation within the Doctoral School.
The Doctoral School of Music and Theatre under IOSUD-UVT offers doctoral candidates the opportunity to choose between a scientific doctorate and a professional doctorate, depending on their academic background in the fundamental field of Humanities and Arts, and whether their work is focused on scientific research or artistic creation within the field of Theatre and Performing Arts.

The funding status of each topic (scholarship-based budget, budget without scholarship, or tuition fee) is determined based on the admission competition, in accordance with the UVT methodology.
Admission
Scientific Doctorate
The admission competition for the scientific doctorate consists of the following stages:
- Oral examination / interview / presentation (~35 mins.)
- Research project defense (~20 mins.)
The candidate will present their research project, including arguments for the chosen topic and bibliography, with a special focus on the original contribution the proposed theme brings to the selected research area. The defense will assess the candidate’s knowledge of existing studies in the field, especially current and relevant research at national and international level, within the context of the proposed doctoral research.
- Interview (~15 mins.)
Q&A session by the committee to test the candidate’s advanced knowledge in the field of Theatre and Performing Arts.
- Research project defense (~20 mins.)
Practical examination – Written test (60 minutes)
After the application period ends, candidates will receive the topics for the written exam. These will be published on the doctoral studies webpage of the Faculty of Music and Theatre (link). The written test will evaluate the candidate’s knowledge in the selected doctoral field and their ability to synthesize relevant information.
Professional Doctorate
The admission competition for the scientific doctorate consists of the following stages:
- Oral examination / interview / presentation (~35 mins.)
- Research project defense (~20 mins.)
The candidate will present their research project, including arguments for the chosen topic and bibliography, with a special focus on the original contribution the proposed theme brings to the selected research area. The defense will assess the candidate’s knowledge of existing studies in the field, especially current and relevant research at national and international level, within the context of the proposed doctoral research.

- Practical examination – Live performance or recording (30 minutes)
The practical exam consists of a role performed by the candidate or presenting a directorial concept from a performed show, scenography, production dramaturgy, etc. The practical test will contain repertoire that is directly correlated with the theme of the research project.
After the registration period is completed, candidates will be notified of the grading. This will be published on the page dedicated to doctoral studies at the Faculty of Music and Theatre (link). This test assesses the artistic abilities and interpretive skills of the candidate within their chosen doctoral field.
