Field of Music
The doctoral field of Music has been active since the 2015–2016 academic year, operating in accordance with Law no. 1/2011 on National Education, the Doctoral Studies Code approved by Government Decision no. 681/2011 (with subsequent amendments), and Order no. 5684/2015 issued by the Ministry of National Education and Scientific Research, approving the Music doctoral field within the doctoral school organized by the West University of Timișoara.
The program allows PhD students to choose between a scientific doctorate or a professional doctorate, depending on their background in the fundamental field of Humanities and Arts, in either scientific research or artistic creation.

The funding status of each topic (scholarship-based budget, budget without scholarship, or tuition fee) is determined based on the admission competition, in accordance with the UVT methodology.
Admission
Scientific Doctorate
The admission competition for the scientific doctorate consists of the following stages:
- Oral examination / interview / presentation (~35 mins.)
- Research project defense (~20 mins.)
The candidate will present their research project, including arguments for the chosen topic and bibliography, with a special focus on the original contribution the proposed theme brings to the selected research area. The defense will assess the candidate’s knowledge of existing studies in the field, especially current and relevant research at national and international level, within the context of the proposed doctoral research.
- Interview (~15 mins.)
Q&A session by the committee to test the candidate’s advanced knowledge in music theory, musical forms, harmony, counterpoint, music history, aesthetics, performance stylistics, etc.
- Research project defense (~20 mins.)
Practical examination – Written test (60 minutes)
After the application period ends, candidates will receive the topics for the written exam. These will be published on the doctoral studies webpage of the Faculty of Music and Theatre (link). The written test will evaluate the candidate’s knowledge in the selected doctoral field and their ability to synthesize relevant information.
Professional Doctorate
The admission competition for the scientific doctorate consists of the following stages:
- Oral examination / interview / presentation (~35 mins.)
- Research project defense (~20 mins.)
The candidate will present their research project, including arguments for the chosen topic and bibliography, with a special focus on the original contribution the proposed theme brings to the selected research area. The defense will assess the candidate’s knowledge of existing studies in the field, especially current and relevant research at national and international level, within the context of the proposed doctoral research.
- Interview (~15 mins.)
Q&A session by the committee to test the candidate’s advanced knowledge in music theory, musical forms, harmony, counterpoint, music history, aesthetics, performance stylistics, etc.
- Research project defense (~20 mins.)
- Practical examination – Recital (30 minutes)
The recital must include a repertoire directly related to the proposed research topic. After the application period ends, the evaluation criteria for the practical test will be published on the doctoral studies webpage of the Faculty of Music and Theatre (link). This test assesses the artistic abilities and interpretive skills of the candidate within their chosen doctoral field.
